SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competition in over 20 different sports, for children and adults with a learning disability.

SOGB comprises of 12 regions, with over 100 registered groups throughout England, Scotland & Wales. It has one of the largest volunteer programmes in the UK, with over half a million people involved.

Football is just one of 20 sports that Special Olympics GB provides for its members. SOGB endeavours to match players of similar abilities for all events and competitions. This way everyone gets to train, compete, progress and win at their own level. SOGB Football is played at both 5-a-side an 11-a-side

HGFC affiliated to Special Olympics GB in 2004 in order to give it's players more oportunities to play football. In 2005 players from the club went on to represented the region at the SO National Summers Games in Glasgow.

The region (Yorkshire & Humberside) took three 5-a-side squads (Novice, Intermediate and a Girls team), to the National Games for what turned out to be an absolutely fantastic event.

After a very hectic week of football, the Novice team returned home with Silver medals and the girls team Bronze. Harrogate players Martin Hawthorne and Phillipe Berthe just missed out on the medals but finished a very credible fourth place (Intermediates). Tom Ham from Killinghall Nomads was one of our jubilant silver medalists.

Three footballers (as well as six other athletes) from the region have now been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai.
